4 Online Business Ideas for Beginners in Dubai, Including Amazon FBA
Are you looking to start an eCommerce business in Dubai but aren't sure where to begin? Well, you're in luck! As the founder of Amazon Sellers Society and Sellers Society, I've been supporting sellers on the Amazon platform since 2017. While we love Amazon and the Amazon FBA business model, in this post, I'm going to keep my opinion to myself and show you three other ways (besides Amazon FBA) that you can get started with an eCommerce or online business right now in 2024.
Business Model #1: Social Selling
Social selling basically means you just sell products on social media. Opening a social media account and becoming an influencer or creating content (if you don't like the word influencer) is such an easy way to start a business these days. And the best part? It's free!
Here's how it works: You promote products on social media channels and send the customer either directly to purchase that product through your DMs or provide them a link to buy it.
To get started with social selling:
Decide on a niche
Set up social media accounts focused on that niche
Determine if you want to sell your own products or someone else's
If you sell your own products, you'll need to direct customers to your website or have them contact you directly to purchase.
Another option is to sell someone else's products through affiliate marketing. Find products or services related to your niche and promote them on your social channels. When a customer makes a purchase through your unique link, you earn a commission. Amazon has its own affiliate program called Amazon Associates that you can join.
The key to success with social selling is consistency. Don't expect to create one post and immediately get sales. It takes time to build an audience, establish rapport, and create a community.
My suggestion? Just get started! Everyone has a mobile phone with a good camera these days. Don't let anything stand in your way if this is a business model you're interested in pursuing.
Business Model #2: Dropshipping
Dropshipping became really popular about six to seven years ago. The great thing about dropshipping is that you can sell products without physically owning them.
Here's how it works:
Create your own website and list products for sale (that you don't actually own yet)
When a customer makes a purchase, you then buy the product from the manufacturer
The manufacturer ships the product directly to the customer
So why did dropshipping lose some of its popularity? Mainly because consumer behavior has changed. Customers now really value fast, free shipping and easy returns. With dropshipping, customers often have to wait a minimum of 7 days (sometimes up to 30!) to receive their order. In a world of near-instant gratification, waiting that long can feel like an eternity and lead to cancelled orders.
However, if you do want to start a dropshipping business, here are a few tips:
Narrow down your niche
Utilize a program to find trending products
Set up your website on a platform like Shopify or Wix
Partner with a supplier who can fulfill orders for you
While dropshipping does have some challenges, it can still be a good way to get started with eCommerce without a huge upfront investment.
Business Model #3: Print on Demand
Print on demand is one of my favorite online business models, especially if you're a creative person or have a large online following.
Print on demand combines dropshipping and eCommerce. The concept is that you design prints for products like t-shirts, hoodies, mugs, mousepads, bags - anything that can be printed on. You display these designs on your website, and once a customer makes a purchase, the print on demand provider does all the work of printing, packaging and shipping the item.
This is a great model for:
Creative entrepreneurs who want to sell their designs
Influencers who want to create branded merchandise
Anyone with an existing audience they can sell to
To get started, partner with a print on demand provider and start creating your designs! Promote them on your website and social channels and let your provider handle fulfillment.
Business Model #4: Amazon FBA
And finally, we have my personal favorite business model - Amazon FBA. While I love it, I will say it's not for everyone.
The biggest benefit of Amazon FBA is that you gain immediate access to Amazon's huge customer base. They already trust Amazon, so when you sell your products on the platform, they are more likely to trust you too.
There are two ways you can sell on Amazon:
Wholesale/Reselling: Find products that are already selling on Amazon, purchase inventory, and resell them as a third party seller
Private Label: Create your own products and brand, and sell them exclusively on Amazon
The process for both is similar - you need to invest in inventory upfront and send it to Amazon's warehouses. When a customer places an order, Amazon handles all the picking, packing and shipping for you.
To be successful with Amazon FBA:
Conduct thorough product research to find in-demand items
Create compelling product listings that appeal to customers
Continually optimize and advertise your listings for visibility
